This picturesque small village on the left bank of the Danube plus the adjacent wine villages of Joching, Wösendorf an St. Michael make up the largest wine community in the Wachau.

Weissenkirchen is situated at the heart of Wachau. Here you find the ideal starting point for your holiday acitivities in Wachau-Region. Weissenkirchen is the largest wine-growing town in Wachau – 500 hectares are planted with grape varieties like Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Weissburgunder, Zweigelt and St. Laurent.

The Danube Biking Trail runs through Weissenkirchen and many hiking trails invite to walk through vineyards and forests.

Special sights: fortified church in Weissenkirchen and St. Michael, gothic parish church and Teisenhoferhof (Renaissance).

Wachau

Wachau is the 30km long Danube river-valley-region between Melk and Krems. The region Wachau begins at the magnificent baroque Abbey Melk on the southern bank and ends at Abbey Göttweig.

In the Wachau history reaches far into past. The statue “Venus from Willendorf” is 25,000 years old. Wine cultivation were brought from the Romans.

In the Wachau you find historical places all over the area:

Fortresses of Kuenringer knights (11th to 13th century, built fortress Aggstein and fortress Dürnstein, where Richard Lionheart has been prisoned 1192), former residences of the imperial families, abbeys and churches… all in one of the most beautiful cultivated landscape of Austria.

The National Geographic Traveler Magazine elected Wachau the “Best Historic Place” in 2009. Wines of high quality are grown on cliffy stone-terraces and make up this beautiful landscape. 2000, the Wachau was declared part of the UNESCO World heritage.
